Davor Zdravkovski: “Just go for it!” (video)

A new chapter in his personal and professional development is beginning for AEL captain Davor Zdravkovski, who has decided to combine his football career with university studies in Business Administration at European University Cyprus. Through the scholarship programme of the Pancyprian Footballers Association (PASP), Zdravkovski has secured a 75% scholarship to pursue his academic ambitions alongside his professional football commitments.

Speaking with PASP Executive President Spyros Neofytides at AEL’s training ground, Zdravkovski discussed what motivated his decision, the flexibility offered by distance learning, and the importance of footballers preparing for life beyond their playing careers.

“A football career is very short”

As the AEL captain explained, his decision to pursue higher education was far from spontaneous. It was something he had been considering for quite some time. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time and have always wanted to do. Something outside my comfort zone as a footballer,” he explained.

Zdravkovski also emphasised the importance of having a plan for the future beyond professional football. “A football career is very short, and you always need to have a backup plan for what comes next,” he stressed.

He went on to explain that earning a university degree had long been a personal ambition, with Business Administration offering him an opportunity to broaden his knowledge, develop new skills, and explore new possibilities for the future.

The flexibility of distance learning

One of the key factors behind his decision was the flexibility of distance learning, which allows him to balance his academic responsibilities with the demanding schedule of a professional footballer. “I can attend lectures after my training sessions and manage my time. This programme was the ideal choice for me,” he added.

A message to young footballers: “Just go for it!”

The AEL captain also shared an important message with younger players, encouraging them to embrace opportunities for education and personal growth. “Just go for it! Don’t overthink it,” he advised, acknowledging that fear of the unknown can often discourage footballers from stepping outside their comfort zones and pursuing new challenges.

“Many times, we are afraid to do something outside our comfort zone because we are trapped in this football bubble, where everything revolves around football.” Through his message, Zdravkovski encouraged young footballers to be courageous, explore new opportunities, and start thinking about their future beyond the football pitch.

PASP supporting footballers across all divisions

Davor Zdravkovski’s decision highlights the value of pursuing education alongside a professional sporting career. His initiative serves as a positive example for footballers who recognise the importance of investing in their future, both on and off the pitch.

Importantly, all PASP members are eligible to apply for this scholarship, regardless of the division in which they play.

Through its scholarship programme, PASP remains committed to supporting the academic and personal development of its members. By promoting dual careers and providing opportunities to combine competitive football with university education, the Association helps players acquire valuable qualifications, broaden their professional prospects, and build a stronger foundation for life beyond football.
